Blue jean jackets have come back with a vengeance in the past couple of years. I’m starting to see them crop up in every store and in every style. I have three different kinds of denim jackets so I know I will always have one to suit my mood. For the purpose of this post, let’s take a look at a classic blue jean jacket and three ways you can incorporate it into your wardrobe. I’ve also included some links below to classic-looking jackets I love at different price points.
My first option is the classic style jacket with casual black pants (for me this means leggings) and a plain white shirt. I’m a big fan of a blue jean jacket with black pants. It never grows old. Khakis are not my thing, so that could be why I'm such a fan of black pants instead. Khakis remind me of my super awkward, high-water pant leg days of 7th grade. I haven’t bought a pair in at least a decade. In place of khakis, I have a pair of thick black leggings from Anthropologie I like to pair with a white shirt from Old Navy and tennis shoes. I’ll add a cute necklace to change it up then top it with my classic blue jean jacket. This is my go-to errands outfit. Except, I did wear the tutu in the picture below to the grocery store too, so maybe I should say this is a more normal errands look. (Some days you just have to wear a tutu.) Print pants work really well with a denim jacket too. I have some camo leggings I love to wear with a mine. What I really think pushes this kind of outfit over the edge though, is the the white showing below the jacket line. It breaks up the darkness of the denim and black and adds contrast. If it doesn’t scare you too much, flipping the collar up is back. Dressing well is in the details.
My second blue jean jacket option involves black pants, but in a dressier style. I’m working on wearing sequins out more often (who isn’t?) and I think the denim tones down the sequin top just enough so people won’t stare. Also, what’s sexier than denim and heels? Um, nothing. I would definitely wear something like this outfit for a date night or probably just a Tuesday, who knows? I dress for my mood.
Last is this jacket with a skirt or dress. Again, Denim has the ability to make the other clothing you are wearing look more approachable. I also think the juxtaposition of a dressy piece with the casualness of a denim jacket adds a lot of interest to whatever you’re wearing. Now do you see why I’m wearing tutus to the grocery store?!
Hopefully this post inspired you to either purchase a blue jean jacket or it gave you more ideas for how to wear one you already own. There are a zillion different styles of denim jackets. The less classic ones tend to take more attention away from the other pieces you are wearing. If your goal is to make the jacket the centerpiece, than I suggest buying one that has more a little more oomph, like this one with a velvet ruffle. The classic denim jacket will blend in well with most outfits, but that’s not the case with the trendier versions. Let me know what you think! What’s your favorite way to wear a blue jean jacket? Or where did you find your favorite jacket? What other kind of styles are you interested in? I would love to hear what you think in the comments below!
